Protecting Home & Family

In today’s chaotic world, it’s crucial for everyone to understand at least the basic home defense strategies outlined below. I developed a strong interest in survival and self-defense when obtaining my Private Investigator License, and I have continued to work on acquiring the skills necessary to effectively protect myself and my family. Through the journey of launching No Fear Survival and designing and manufacturing Defender Tripwire Alarms, I have gained valuable knowledge and enjoy assisting others in developing a fearless survival mindset by sharing DIY training skills and unique tools I’ve discovered along the way to help safeguard you and yours.

ONION LAYERING

When developing your personal defense strategies, think in terms of layers. Simply trying to confront anyone who dares to enter your home uninvited may not work out well in most situations! However, if you effectively layer your defenses, intruders will likely never reach your home. And if they do, you will be prepared to minimize harm and address the threat. An effective security plan consists of three main components for protecting your home and family.

PERIMETER DEFENSE

It all begins with the perimeter that stretches from your front door to the edge of your property. This is the area where you will deter most intruders. You want to establish a risk-versus-reward scenario. You want the intruder to think that the risk of proceeding further is not worth any potential reward. Increasing perceived risk through having dogs, signs indicating alarm service monitoring, and installing simple perimeter defense systems to deter criminals will be in your best interest. Likely, the intruder will choose to bypass your home entirely and look for easier targets elsewhere.

STRUCTURAL DEFENSE

The next layer is your structure—your home itself. You need to ensure you have the sturdiest doors, windows, and locks possible. You’re still working on the risk-versus-reward concept. The more effort required to break into your home, the less appealing it becomes. Good exterior lighting, especially motion-activated lights, will significantly help deter intrusions at night. Practicing situational awareness is also essential. Sometimes burglars and those wishing you harm observe a home for days to assess how attentive you are to your surroundings. If they see that you are constantly alert to potential threats, they may decide it’s not worth the risk.

SELF DEFENSE

The final layer is your personal safety. If an intruder breaches your perimeter and enters your home, putting you in danger, you should do everything necessary to protect yourself and your family. In most cases, I believe there aren’t many substitutes for a high-quality handgun for self-defense if escape isn't possible. Equally important is the need for frequent training to use it safely and effectively. Strategically placing hidden pepper spray throughout your home is a good alternative if you are uncomfortable with firearms. Learning martial arts and other self-defense techniques, such as defending against knife attacks, can be extremely beneficial. Think about it—you may find yourself unarmed at the worst possible time, and having any advantage over your attacker could be critical; it may even save your life.

It’s essential to take a moment to peel back the onion layers and examine your plan for protecting your home and family. Do you have a solid layered defense system in place? What adjustments need to be made?
